Welcome to our "Theatre Making Workshops for Kids" school holiday programme!


Is your child super creative and interested in theatre?

Would they like to be involved with one of our shows?


We have a very exciting opportunity this April school holidays, for students to get some hands on experience in the many different aspects of theatre making! Each day we will bring in experienced KTC practitioners to focus on a new area of theatre that will inspire your child's creativity and imagination and develop practical new skills!


Much of the work designed and created during this school holiday programme will be used to create the wonderful world of Fantastic Mr Fox, our mid-year production!


No previous experience in theatre making is necessary. All materials and equipment will be provided, and our friendly tutors will be on hand to guide your child every step of the way.


All workshops will be held at the Kerikeri Theatre Company's studio, Black Box Theatre, and will be held from 9am to 3pm.

Tuesday 11th April

THEATRE GAMES

$40 per student

6-10 years only

Willi Henley is a long time Youth Theatre tutor with massive experience and even bigger energy! He will guide your child through a series of theatre games that encourage teamwork, communication, and creative thinking. These games are designed to help your child build confidence and feel comfortable expressing themselves in a safe, supportive environment.

Wednesday 12th April

PROP DESIGN & BUILD

$50 per student

8 years +

Props are an essential element in helping to tell a story. They give the audience clues about the time, place and emotion in a scene and help to ground the actors performance and give actions purpose. Under the guidance of props master Maura Bailie-Bellew, to create props for one of the most climactic scenes in Fantastic Mr Fox. 

Students will get to see their work come alive in the July Holiday performance.

Thursday 13th April

SET DESIGN & BUILD

$50 per student

8 years +

Theatre Sets come in all shapes and sizes and every piece put onto the stage must have a purpose in the telling of the story. Working with set designer, Kylie Penn, students will learn about elements of set, the process of designing for the stage and participate in the construction of set pieces to be used in our upcoming mid-year Youth Production! 

Friday 14th April

COSTUME DESIGN & BUILD

$50 per student

8 years +

They say never judge a book by it’s cover but, in designing costumes for theatre, Kylie Penn believes it is essential for an audience to be able to understand who a character is at first glance.

In this workshop we will explore different materials and techniques to create unique and memorable costumes inspired by the characters of Fantastic Mr Fox. Each participant will make their own set of animal ears to take home! We will also look at the importance of make-up in creating character and experiment with face-painting.

Monday 17th April

MUSIC FOR THEATRE

$50 per student

11 years +

Your child will learn how to compose music that enhances the story and emotion of Fantastic Mr Fox. They'll explore different styles and instruments to create an original musical score.

Tuesday 18th April

TECH FOR THEATRE

$50 per student

11 years +

Learn the incredibly valuable art of sound and lighting design and application for theatre!

This workshop will offer students a basic understanding of the principals of sound and lighting planning as well as the practical use of equipment during the design process.

Inspired by our upcoming show, participants will get to see how lighting and sound design will bring the world of Fantastic Mr Fox to life. Students will learn how to create mood and atmosphere with these tech elements to create a seamless theatrical experience.

Why are there different age limits on the classes?

Each workshop has a different level of difficulty and some require a certain level of ability for the students to get the most out of each class. We feel the ages we have noted for each class are appropriate for the activities. We have tried our best to offer a range of opportunities for a range of different age levels :)

Where is the Black Box Theatre located?

The Black Box Theatre is located within the Kerikeri Theatre Company studio at 17B/C Sammaree Place, Kerikeri.

It is off Mill Lane in the heart of Kerikeri’s industrial area.
